Acne is a very distressing condition and a patient often experiences emotional disorders while suffering from it.
To get rid of it a range of treatment options are available which even if not able to cure completely can at least lessen the effects left by acne. The main aim of these treatments is to prevent formation of new pimples, cysts and scars.
The first step towards spot less skin should be to wash acne-affected areas with a cleanser at least twice a day. But avoid strong soaps as they may take away the amount of oil required by the skin to maintain its natural condition.
A number of over the counter products containing benzoyl peroxide are also available to treat mild forms of acne. Benzoyl peroxide acts as an anti-bacterial agent, which removes the surface layer of dead skin and prevents blocking of pores and development of infection. It may cause irritation and reddishness on the skin, which tends to settle down with the passage of time.
Besides Benzoyl peroxide azelaic acid (Skinoren) is also used which does not leave painful effects on the skin.
Vitamin A based medications known as retinoids are also available which works by peeling off the outer layer of the skin. These are usually applied on the skin once or twice a day. Antibiotic lotions are also available which controls the formation of P. acnes bacteria. Antibiotics tablets, such as tetracycline are used for inflammatory acne and should be taken daily for about 3-6 months to observe maximum number of benefits. Isotretinoin also known as Accutane is a form of drug only prescribed to people suffering from severe forms of acne. It works by drying up oily secretion and has serious side effects such as liver disorders and depression.
