Acne Drug Spurs Development in Spinal Cord Treatment

Calgary University: Dr.John Hurlbert, Dr.Steven Casha and Dr.Voon Wee Young, researchers of the Calgary University brought about a promising treatment for spinal cord injuries. According to them a drug used to treat acne can be utilized for treating SCI patients. The “minocycline” element found in these drugs helped patients to have chances of mobility.

Dr.Hulbert tried the drug on mice and discovered that they had improved walking abilities and the spinal cord had even developed a better appearance. It had also been noted that minocycline treatment was much more effective than the standard methylprednisolone. According to the doctors, it would not be difficult to have minocycline prescribed as already it was being administered to patients suffering from acne. However, the problem quoted was that of financial funding for a large scale human testing.

The team is aiming to bring the study’s next phase in Canada, which will be funded by the Rick Hansen Institute. There will be nationwide study of the proposed treatment by clinics and laboratories in Canada.

Dr.Hurlbert expressed his appreciation for the support received from medical institutes and hopes to further bring about a final conclusion to the use of acne drug on healing SCI patients.
