Health experts define acne as a skin problem that develops when there is an infection as a result of excessive production of oil by the sebaceous glands. The types of acne include pustules, pa-pules and cysts. Usually over the counter medication is taken as treatment for mild acne, systematic medication such as oral antibiotics and certain topical treatments are prescribed when one is suffering from severe acne. Acne can be caused due to several reasons; it is difficult to clearly identify a particular cause since several variables can induce the skin condition. Acne can be caused as a result of mental stress, changes in the environment, and hormonal shifts in the body, allergic reaction, genetic traits and even sports among numerous other causes.
Acne that develops as a result of sports also known as sports acne is identified in medical terms as acne mechanica or body acne. Acne in such cases develops when the skin is exposed to and irritated by pressure, heat and recurring motion. When a person covers the parts of the skin with for example helmets, shoulder pads or head bands acne is more likely to develop in those areas of the body.
Sports acne can be present or even aggravated if an individual already suffers from a minor skin condition. The primary reason is the sweating and trapped heat that leads to skin irritation, rashes and acne. One useful way to improve the condition is to wash the skin regularly and use a mild moisturizer that will allow the pores of the skin to get unclogged as well as remove dirt and bacteria. Excessive washing is not favorable since it can cause further irritation and spreading of the acne. Benzoyl peroxide cream 5% concentration can also be applied to exacerbate the skin problem. In case the acne gets worse one should consult a dermatologist for a suitable acne treatment.
