Acne condition develops when the sebaceous glands excrete excessive amounts of oil that clog up the pores of the hair follicle, when dirt and bacteria begin to produce within these clogged pores acne formation becomes inevitable. Acne is considerably the most common condition that affects a majority of people regardless of their age bracket. It is often assumed that acne mostly affects adolescents during puberty and abates over time, however in truth acne is a skin condition that does not easily go away and the acne sufferers include adults, older people and children as well.
Various treatments are prescribed based on the type and the extent of severity of the acne. Usually topical treatment and homemade remedies can prove to be effective for mild acne however in the case of severe acne stronger medication is prescribed.
According to health experts one of the means to improve acne condition involves improving and maintaining ones hygiene. This includes washing the face and body with warm water or luke warm water twice a day on a regular basis. The acne affected areas should not be touched, rubbed or picked since this only pushes the oil deeper into the clogged pores making it difficult to treat, it also causes skin irritation and acne scarring.
As mentioned previously the most frequent treatment for mild cases are topical treatments. Benzoyl peroxide of 2.5-5% can be applied in minute amounts directly onto the affected areas. The medication is effective in reducing inflammation, unclogging of the pores and slowing down the condition. Systematic treatments can be taken if topical treatments are not effective enough. In such cases oral antibiotics are prescribed such as doxycycline and tretracycline.
For severe cases a stronger acne medication is prescribed such as isotretinin which permanently cures the acne over a period of six months however it also carries major side affects therefore such treatment should only be taken after the recommendation of a doctor and when all other treatments deem ineffective.
