What is Blackhead?

Blackhead is a type of pimple or open comedone that is filled with pus (a mixture of white blood cells, bacteria and dead skin cells). Most people are confused with blackhead and whitehead. If the sebum pops out the bump, it is called blackhead and if the sebum still stays inside the bump, it is called whitehead. There are various causes of blackheads, but the foremost cause is the over production of sebum that clogs hair follicles. When hair follicles are clogged and sebum is excessively produced continuously, there develops a bump.

Blackheads are usually brown or dark red in color. It is considered that blackheads get brown due to accumulation of dirt. But theoretically, blackheads are brown due to accumulation of melanin on the upper surface of the skin of the lesion. If blackheads are not treated properly, it leads to deep skin infection. Pustules and papules are severe forms of blackhead.

Blackheads can be treated easily in their initial phase by using certain over the counter remedies. But first you need proper diagnosis to know what causes acne. You can use facial cleanser that removes excessive oil and dirt from your skin and unclogs blocked hair follicles. You should also use suitable skin care tonics for topical skin rejuvenation.
