Everyone has to face any type of skin disorder at least once in a life time. It can be a acne, insects bite, infection or scars. Normally acne and other skin disorders appear due to some kind of lesions. Lesion is a growth or patch of the skin that does not resemble the surrounding area.
These lesions cause many skin disease. There are many type of lesions which are categorised into two types, primary and secondary. Some most common types of skin lesions are following:
Macule:
it is a most common type of skin lesion. It is 1 cm in diameter. It has different colors like brown, white or red. Most common examples are freckles and flat moles.
Vesicle:
It is caused by sunburns, insect bites, chemical irritation, or certain viral infections, such as herpes. It is a raised lesion in 5 mm in diameter.
Pustule:
It is a raised lesion filled with pus and caused by infection like acne or boils.
Papules:
It is a solid raised lesion, less 1 cm in diameter. It has a rough texture and red, pink or brown in color. It is caused by warts, syphilis, psoriasis, seborrheic and actinic keratoses, lichen planus, and skin cancer.
Nodule:
It is a solid lesion that has hard mask like structure from the tissue surrounding it. If it is more than 2 cm in diameter, then it becomes a tumor. It is associated with other conditions like keratinous cysts, lipomas, fibromas, and some types of lymphomas.
Excoriation:
It is a secondary type of lesion which is caused by scratching or picking at a primary lesion.
Scar:
It is a most common secondary type of skin lesion. It is a discolored fibrous tissue replaced permanently normal skin after destruction of the dermis. keloid is a type of scar which is very thick and raised.
Atrophy:
it Is a common skin lesion normally seen in old age people. It is caused by using of very strong topical corticosteroid medication as well. In this lesion skin area becomes very thin and wrinkled.
Dermatologists diagnose skin lesions with the help of patients history, characteristics of lesion and where and ho wit appears on patients body and treat it accordingly. Most of the skin lesions are avoided by taking care of your skin but some are unavoidable. Most importantly do not pick any skin lesion in any condition. Get yourself checked regularly if you have any type of skin lesion so that you can avoid problem in future.
