Acne vulgaris is a common type of acne associated with the inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands of the skin. This type of acne give rise to red elevated areas on the skin that later turn into pustules and cysts that cause scarring. These pustules are usually filled with white pus and discharge the same when squeezed.

Acne vulgaris usually affects the face, neck, and back of a person and is more commonly observed amongst teenagers compared to young adults. Bacterial infection of the skin and excessive stimulation by androgens (male hormones) are also two main causes that give rise to Acne vulgaris.

Many over the counter acne products such as astringent lotions, gels, oil-removing pads, and medicated bar soaps are used to cure this type of acne but the main problem is that these products try to cure the symptoms of vulgaris acne rather than trying to understand and eliminate its root cause. It has been observed that taking moderate amount of zinc supplements about 30 mg two or three times daily for few months also plays a major role in reducing the severity of vulgaris acne symptoms and is almost equivalent to taking an oral antibiotic therapy. Vitamin A is also considered as a useful supplement to treat severe acne conditions but it is also noticed that the acne usually returns once the use of natural vitamin A is discontinued. It is also suggested that taking moderate amount of vitamin B6 usually 50 mg per day lessens premenstrual flare-ups experienced by some women which ultimately cures vulgaris acne but it has also been observed that vitamin B6 supplements sometimes worsens the conditions of acne vulgaris. Use of natural herbs like tea tree oil and benzoyl peroxide is also effective for overcoming symptoms of vulgaris acne.
